Parachute Pavilion

The BOARDWALK is arguably the most DISTINCTIVE feature in Coney Island to the majority of people.

Walking along it, we can sense what used to be a fantastic place for new-yorkers to go and have fun. It was also an important part of the «magical parks» that fascinated thousands of people. It was known in its heyday as the «Ocean Board Walk».
The boardwalk has become a SYMBOL of this passage through ludic times.
When analyzing the conditions surrounding the site, we came to the conclusion that the «parachute jump» and the boardwalk were BASIC elements in the design of the PAVILLION. The parachute jump would necessarily CONTAIN the space in the pavillion and the boardwalk would EMBRACE it.

The concept behind the design of the building that would evoke wonderful activities and become the catalyst in the revival of Coney Island is clear: to CONNECT the pavillion, boardwalk, and parachute jump. The parachute jump simply needs to be acknowledged for its overwhelming presence, and the boardwalk needs to EXTEND into the pavillion.

In this proposal, the boardwalk BECOMES the pavillion, it SHAPES the pavillion with sloped timber decks. An ACCESS DECK links Riegelmann boardwalk with the pavillion’s open space. WALKING the pavillion becomes walking the boardwalk.
Two more elements complete the pavillion: the first is a box containing the bar that overlooks the soccer fields, the main entrance to the restaurant and to the store. The second is a skylight connecting the parachute jump with the interior of the pavillion, the visitor thus experiencing the «PARACHUTE JUMP» as an ESSENTIAL part of the building.
